What to expect

A Counsellor and Psychotherapist will listen to all you need and want to say and will respect your values. This can enable you to have an increasing awareness of yourself and your choice of possibilities. A Counsellor will give little or no direct advice, as the aim of Counselling and Psychotherapy is to help you to develop insight and a new way of understanding your problems and to enable you to build some foundations for change. It can be enormously helpful and illuminating to hear yourself talking about your situation to somebody else who doesn’t know you in any other context.

Initially the process might feel strange. It might feel uncomfortable at first to talk about yourself with a stranger. Sometimes it can be difficult to start Counselling because you know deep down that you have some difficult issues to address.

Counselling can also be liberating because of the sense that you are making moves towards releasing yourself from the pressures you have been under and which have felt heavy and hard to bear. Sometimes it can be similar to feeling you have just put a heavy dragging weight down and don’t need to pick it up again. It can also be freeing to have the opportunity of reflecting on issues in your own space with someone not known to you in any other way but who is trained and experienced in helping people gain insights and release.

The Counselling/Psychotherapy process can enable you to understand more of the background to what is happening in your life and make sense of the emotions you are experiencing. This can help unlock the patterns of behaviour which have been repeating in your life and thus provide a release.

"We know what we are, but know not what we may be" William Shakespeare
